Both Weekends (May 1-3 & May 8-10)

First class meeting: May 1 at 6pm at Nicholas County High School.

Firefighter 2

Firefighter II is the final step for interior structural firefighters, based on NFPA 1001 (Firefighter Level II) performance objectives. The course covers incident command, building collapse, vehicle extrication, technical rescue, hose testing, foam operations, flammable materials, fire detection and alarms, fire cause analysis, communications, reporting, pre-fire planning, and tactical strategy.

Must be Firefighter 1 certified.

Must bring full PPE, SCBA, and spare bottle.


First Weekend (May 1)

Only class meeting: May 1 at 6pm at Nicholas County High School.

OSHA 29 CFR 1910.156 Seminar

This evening seminar will provide fire service personnel with an overview of OSHA 29 CFR 1910.156 and the proposed updates that may impact fire department operations, training, safety, and compliance. Attendees will review key portions of the current standard, examine major proposed changes, and discuss how those changes could affect departmental policies, staffing, medical requirements, and training expectations. 


First Weekend (May 1-3)

First class meetings: May 1 at 6pm at Nicholas County High School.

Rapid Intervention Team (RIT)

This course trains firefighters to form and operate an effective RIT. Blending classroom theory with hands-on exercises, it covers essential rescue operations including team organization, deployment, communication, and safe fireground tactics. Emphasis is placed on rapid, coordinated responses to assist firefighters in distress while ensuring overall incident safety.

Must have Firefighter 1.

Must have full PPE, SCBA, and spare bottle.

Vehicle Extrication Awareness and Operations

This course teaches vehicle rescue techniques including vehicle/machine classification, extrication, stabilization, patient disentanglement and care, Incident Command System operations, and incident termination. The course emphasizes hands-on skills.

Must have full PPE and eye protection.


First Weekend (May 2-3)

First class meeting: May 2 at 8am at Nicholas County High School.

Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (EVOC)

This course is a combination classroom and practical skills training focused on emergency vehicle operations. Topics include safety, legal aspects, inspection, and driver responsibilities. Both written and practical examinations are administered. This class meets WV State Fire Commission driver training requirements and recommendations.

It is recommended that you bring apparatus from your own department to drive.

Fire Investigation Level 1

This course is designed to give initial responders the knowledge and ability to recognize the signs of an intentionally set fire. This knowledge guides responders in evidence preservation and notification of appropriate officials. This course covers the basic topics of: Fire behavior, critical observations on scene, fire cause, scene security, evidence preservation, legal considerations, and proper reporting procedures.


Second Weekend (May 9-10)

First class meetings: May 9 at 8am at Nicholas County High School.

Fire Investigation Level 2

This course provides responders with more advanced skills in determining fire origin and cause. Students will strengthen their understanding of fire dynamics, scene examination, and investigation procedures. Emphasis is placed on documentation, evidence handling, interview techniques, and coordination with investigators. Topics include fire pattern analysis, origin determination, evidence collection, witness interviews, scene reconstruction, legal considerations, and courtroom testimony.

Vehicle Extrication Technician

This course is designed to train responders to safely extricate victims from passenger vehicles, focusing on stabilizing the vehicle, creating access/egress, and removing patients using tools, following NFPA standards for incidents on wheels, sides, or roofs, and emphasizing rescuer/patient safety. This role involves scene size-up, hazard mitigation, and advanced problem-solving with various equipment.

Must be Vehicle Extrication Operations certified.

Must have full PPE and eye protection.

All classes are instructed by WVU Fire Service Extension.


All classes will first meet at Nicholas County High School. Instructors will then notify students if there is a different local location for remaining portions of the class.

Sat-Sun classes begin at 8am.


Nicholas County firefighters: $25 per student per class.

Out-of-county firefighters: $50 per student per class.


Yes! Vendors will be present at Nicholas County High School on May 2, and vendors will be announced soon!
